GAME: Super Smash Brothers Melee TYPE: Beat Um Up CONSOLE: Gamecube Developer: HAL Laboratories (In house Nintendo) ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Super Smash Brothers Melee is the squeal to the hugely successful N64 classic. Which sees you take control of your Nintendo favourites and pitch them against each other in a fight to the bitter death or at least until there sent flying into the scenery.
The games cut scenes are brilliant and the first time that you view the opening sequence you can’t help but stair in amazement as you see some of your old favourites show off there next gen curbs. The character animation is among the best we’ve seen from the Gamecube and each character has a very distinct way of walking, jumping and attacking. The colouring is typically Nintendo and the sound clicks into place perfectly. It’s also in 2D, Well sort of. It’s not quite three dimensional but more than standard 2D. I can’t under stand why it isn’t in full 3D, we no the Gamecube’s capable of it.
In gameplay terms, It starts off well and your playing away happily with your favourite characters kicking the crap into each other and thats the way it stays. Which is the problem, It’s far too same old for my liking. There is an adventure mode with some of our favourite locations included but after a while it suffers the same fate and the classic battle. There are hundreds of different trophies and dozens of secret characters to unlock but this just isn’t enough to save the game. Note, I have a very short attention span.
But, Thats just the single player. The multiplayer is completely different. It’s brilliant, And this is whats kept the game form being traded in. For multi player fun this is almost on-par with the likes of Super Monkey Ball and Goldeneye.
At the end of the day Super Smash Brothers Melee is a decent single player game, with an awesome four person multi player mode. Which is why im going to recommend it to you, but only as a multi player game. If you want a single player game then this ones ‘OK’ but nothing more
